The Greatness of Photoshop (and the Downside of It)
13 Comments | Posted by Kelvin Servigon in Digital Art, Graphic Design
The power of Adobe Photoshop is enormous, incredible, amazing. Yeah, any great positive adjective can describe it. Adobe Photoshop saved many lives, too. How? By simply manipulating their photos (celebrities, I’m talking to you). Many people around the globe are using Photoshop to help them in their “problems”. They found it nice. But, is it really nice?
One of the most significant things that made Adobe Photoshop popular is its ability to manipulate photos, easily and in a very flexible way. Like what I’ve posted here, the Photoshop virtual beauty tutorial, you can change your looks in Photoshop (but only virtually).
Here’s some videos of photo-manipulating in enhancing beauty:
Dove Evolution
From Fat to Hot
Another good thing in Photoshop is its ability to create art. Digital art is the right term for artworks done using Adobe Photoshop. And I found some cool videos of cool digital arts. Here:
Fantasy Art Done Using Photoshop
Speed Drawing
Indeed, Photoshop is an incredible tool for us, graphic designers, photographers, or any people who enjoy art. But unfortunately, because of Photoshop, the “real beauty” has been distorted, the traditional art has been forgotten by some artists, and many different photo scandals scattered around the web that are fake. Everything that is great has some downsides on it, just like Photoshop.
Let’s just say we love Photoshop, but fake photos sucks. But we do love fake photos, in some ways (like in a funny way). So, I think, the right sentence that I must write here to end this post is my greatest law in Photoshop:
Do not over do it.

Photomanipulation has no place in journalism AT ALL. Unfortunately, the ability to manipulate photos so easily leads to temptation and, naturally, a questioning of the credibility of EVERY photo. You’re too young to remember, but one of the first scandals came long before Photoshop, in 1970: http://journalism_jobs.tripod.com/a.filo.html
That was just a minor, cosmetic touch-up that probably sparked any number of weird conspiracy theories.
Then there’s this, my very OBVIOUS manipulation (but it’s still fun): http://www.shutterstock.com/pic.mhtml?id=316647
The thing is, with the latter, no one’s really fooled – nor is fooling anyone any part of my intentions. But when it comes to journalism, we need just the unvarnished truth. When it comes to journalism, it’s a matter of ethics.

You’re right that Photo-manipulation has no place in journalism. But what I can see now is that, some of the cover of a magazine has been manipulated. And even in the newspapers.
So, in conclusion, Photoshop is not for journalists. BTW, the second link that you’ve posted rocks. LOL
Thank you for a great comment, Ate Holly!

Thanks, Kelvin! Would you believe that second link was my FIRST attempt at photomanipulation? There was a feature in PSP (“Arithmetic”) that I really didn’t (and still don’t fully) understand. But I lucked out and combined two photos that worked SO well together – add a little mask layering and it just lined up perfectly! What fun. I was hooked. But it’s the difference between writing non-fiction and writing fantasy fiction. It leads to questions of trustworthiness, if used in the wrong context.

Because of Photoshop, now when you see a picture/photo you first have to wonder if is it that amazing or it’s just photoshopped.
But, what are you going to do? We all use it, we all need it.

You’re right, in some ways, Photoshop is indeed very essential.

indeed, photoshop has become a great tool. and sometimes there is a vague distinction between enhancement and manipulation.

LOL, maybe if we ask celebrities about their photoshopped photos, they’ll say that it’s just an enhancement, but when we ask graphic artists, they’ll say it’s a work of manipulation. LOL

I never forgot what one lady said in Twitter: “Forget diamonds! Photoshop is a woman’s new best friend!”
