The Advantages of Being a Blogger and Graphic Designer At The Same Time
26 Comments | Posted by Kelvin Servigon in Graphic Design
In the whole blogosphere, I introduced myself as a teen blogger, photographer and graphic designer. Yeah, being a blogger and photographer is fun. And being a graphic designer is fun, too. The first thing that I blog here is about my digital artworks in different styles. Most of them are photo manipulations of my photos. In short, I really love graphic designing.
And, right now, I have a question to myself that I need to answer. What are the advantages of being a blogger and graphic designer at the same time?
1. Create your own graphics. If you’re a graphic designer, I know you can create your own desired blog theme. I know you can design your own blog logo. And I know you don’t have to hire someone and spend money to create your 125×125 blog badge or your own blog mascot. In blogging, you need to be a creative writer, but you need to impress your readers with nice pictures within your blog, too. And these pictures are just a piece of cake if you know how to design graphics very well.
2. Blog revenues plus graphic designing job payments. So, you’re making money online, right? Then, be a graphic designer, too. With blogging, you can earn money by posting paid posts/reviews, adding ads on your blog or even persuading your readers to try a specific product for some money. Yeah, that’s you (and me). In graphic designing, you can earn lots of money, too. How? You can accept graphic design jobs, in direct offers. Many bloggers and webmasters around need the beauty of your designs. And most of them are willing to pay for your efforts (mostly in you desired price). But if no one offers you one, you can hunt them. In different freelancing websites, there are lots of job openings in graphic designing field. And guess what, they are willing to pay you not only dollars, but hundreds and hundreds of dollars (please take note of that).
3. More fun. Who told you designing is boring? Designing is insanely enjoyable! In this passion, your creativity will be extremely used. You’ll let your imagination flow until the right concept is achieved. Yeah, even the software you’re using is a bit complicated (only at first), the fun and joy that will burst on it are worth the effort. I can still remember my first months in graphic designing, I was so excited whenever I got a new photo. I was so excited to edit them! Yeah, from an ordinary photo into a different look, from retro to bloody up to colorful.
4. More friends. In blogosphere, we met (virtually or in-person) different people in different countries. Why? Because we have the same passion – blogging. The world of blogosphere is indeed big, but the world of graphic designer is bigger. Right now, I met (virtually) different people. Most of them are my fellow freelancers in many freelancing sites. In short, more industries you enter (like blogging and graphic designing), more friends you’ll gain.
5. It builds up the “art” in you. Just like what I’ve said in # 3, your creativity will be extremely used in this chapter of your life. And of course, as your life as a graphic designer grows, your creativity or “the art in you” grows, too. It’s exciting, right?
Those five are only simple advantages of being a graphic designer and blogger at the same time that will probably hit you. Yeah, only five. I mean, you’ll definitely have more advantages as you grow as a graphic designer.
I hope, in this post, you’re now thinking of learning graphic designing. Hey, I got some tutorials for your nice start:

It does give you a certain advantage being a niche blogger.
It’s great to know that even at a young age your mindset is already very entrepreneurial.
Way to go Kelvs!

As far as blogging goes, in my opinion, being good at graphics trumps just about everything. Good graphics will overcome both mediocre content and mediocre programming.

I agree with you totally! In fact, I am also getting into graphic designing, and I love creating a distinctively different space for my blog. It’s an ongoing learning process, and definitely can bring income if you put your heart and soul into learning it!

Hi Kelvin. Great post. I am not an expert in design but I do know how to play a little with Corel and Photoshop. I think that both apps makes the non savvy’s life a little easier. If you have can have the best of both worlds (blogger and designer), then yeah, you should definitely leverage on that

Cool, I used to play with Corel when I was a high school student. But now, Photoshop is my playground in design and really loving it.
Thanks DiTesco.

Too bad I have no talent for graphics design. My blog relied on packaged themes. Well, at least I have the blogging part.
