The Advantages and Disadvantages of Having a Web Hosting Account (For Free)
14 Comments | Posted by Kelvin Servigon in Thoughts
I started in blogging last September 2008. I created my blog at a free blog platform, which was widely used in the blogosphere. My experience on it was nice, hassle-free but of course, with limited possibilities. But one day, I was given a web hosting account space, a domain and all setting-up of a self-hosted blog, all for free from a very nice friend. That’s how lucky I was way back then.
Ok, now, my blog is in a self-hosted blog platform. With so much possibilities, I am really satisfied with where my blog sits right now. But as my “free” blogging life goes on, I experienced different circumstances with it. And to be more presentable, I arranged it in a listed format.
First, the advantages:
- It’s free! Does anyone here doesn’t like a free web hosting account? With a very great “specs” attached on it? Tell me if your answer is not, and why.
- Hassle-free. In purchasing a web hosting account, you don’t only pay them once. You’ll pay them regularly. Every month, or every year, you’ll pay them some dollars. Hey, that’s not cool! But in a free web hosting account (actually, not free. I said “free” because you’re not the one paying for it), you’ll just blog, blog and blog.
Next, the disadvantages:
- Not forever. So, you’re looking forward of blogging with a free web hosting from a good friend, forever? Hey, wake-up! That’s not possible. Right now, I am really planning of having my own web hosting account. But still, can’t afford it. So, still stick to free. LOL
- Limited Access. You have the access to the web host account but it’s not totally yours. Still, it’s your friend’s account. So, you don’t have the rights or authority to change settings or any other stuffs on it.
Those four were the stuffs that I encountered as my “free” blogging life goes on. But just what like I said, I am really planning to purchase a Web Hosting account. I just found one, a UK-based Web Hosting company that offers nice packages for bloggers like us. I hope that someday, I’ll have my own web hosting account from that company or any other companies around the web.

Ah, if only your free blogging experience could go on forever! Really puts the pressure on when you have to start paying for things, eh? Hope there is enough added value there to make it worth it.

Indeed. Not only the pressure, but the money that you’ll gonna lose, too. LOL

Although I purchased my domain from GoDaddy, I didn’t avail of the free web hosting they offered. Their domain manager page is very difficult to navigate. I use JustHost, a UK based web hosting company. They have cPanel, very easy to navigate for those who do not have any background in computer science. Best of all, the price is very affordable. If you’re in Asia, you’ll be asked to pay in Singaporean dollars, cheaper than USD.

Cool, so JustHost is one your recommended web hosting companies around? Ok, I’ll check it out when I will purchase a web hosting account, soon.
Thanks Mr. Jojo Agot!

Indeed Bro, though it will take you to your destination, there are bumps on free rides. Nonetheless, if is better to have some generous soul by your side than nothing at all.

Haha, yeah, the only “bumps” on my free ride that I am experiencing now are only technical problems (on the web host) and not on the generous friend who gave me the pass to the free ride.

You’d find a way, Kelvin. Gem knows a lot about freelancing. Perhaps you’d learn a lot of useful things from her. Every little thing helps as Ditesco always says. Your hobbies and budding talents today will soon serve you well, if not already.

You are very lucky dude for having a free domain site! And I must say that your friend is really generous huh. =] I am planning to have my own domain when I get my revenue here on blogosphere.
