10 Tips on How To be Photogenic

I’d been taking pictures of others for sometime. But for sometime, too, I’d been the model for other photographers. Being a model is a lot of fun. Especially when your photographer has a good sense of humor. Friendship is instant here.

But there’s always sad moment. When you saw the results of your photos–unpleasant, not appropriate, HORRIBLE. But you can avoid this depressing moment if you are PHOTOGENIC (yeah).

Being photogenic is very important in taking photos of humans (like us). Some says that it’s a gift from God, but for me, it’s not a gift, it’s a skill. You can learn how yourself to be photogenic in pictures. You can practice many things to achieve your photogenic looks. And there are several ways to do this.

Based from my little experience, and from some google research, I found 10 ways on how to be photogenic. Yeah, brace yourself for these ways–very simple.

  1. Know your angle. Everytime you face the mirror, try looking for the best angle where you are looking good. Is it at the left side of your face? Right side? Front? Look for it.
  2. Practice smiling. Before facing the camera, face first your best buddy, the mirror. Practice smiling, know your perfect smile. In some case, when your smiling in front of a camera, you believe that your smile is nice, but when you look yourself at the mirror, it’s unpleasant. This happens because you don’t give your best smile. Hey, you’re beautiful right? C’mon, give ‘em your best SMILE!
  3. Can’t smile that much? Saying some words while smiling will help you, a little. The word cheese will give you the ordinary smile. But saying “A”, pronounced as “ey” not “ah”, while smiling will open your mouth a little bit which will give you some spice in your face. Sexy looking thing.
  4. Think yourself as the most handsome/beautiful living creature in the world. This will help you. It will boost your confidence in front of the camera. BELIEVE YOURSELF.
  5. Choose appropriate clothes when taking yourself. Choose the clothes that will fit not only you but also the background. (This is applicable only for self-portraits. Being a model doesn’t need this, because other staffs will do this for them )
  6. Give yourself some facial treatment. I mean, wear some make-up. If necessary, wear heavier make-up, or light ones if not. It will extremely help you, especially to those who have acne.
  7. Always straight, but not all the time. While in front of camera, if you are standing, stand straight. Always do the good posture. But always obey what the photographer said for your pose. But if you think something’s wrong, try to tell it to him. It’s not bad to express your feelings, right?
  8. Play with your eyes. Your eye is your key to good expression, especially in not-smiling poses. Fierce eyes–very great!
  9. Relax. Relax yourself man. Don’t be nervous or afraid in front of the camera, it will not eat you! Being relax will help you be good in photos, but being nervous will be reflected in the photos. You choose.
  10. Enjoy the shoot. Being comfortable with your co-workers will boost some confidence, and enjoying the shoot will give you more perfect smiles and relaxing poses.

I hope these ten tips helped you to be photogenic, or confident in facing the camera. And I know, there are other ways on how to be photogenic in photos. Do you have one tip? Share it below.

absolutely i cant practice smiling, i dont even want to smile in front of the camera, left or right, i agree with that, because sometimes or maybe often and i dont know, that the face of the subject is not proportion in some angle.

Nice tips Kelvin, coming from a model! Naks!

Were you able to attend VTRs too for commercial modeling stints? Mas nakakakaba yun. I remember the first time that I had one before, my face is too nervous to smile. Ramdam ko naginginig mukha ko.

Anyway, I think that the most important is to believe in yourself and have confidence.

Think I’ll be needing some advise here since I’m currently on a family trip, heavy snapshots definitely present. Finding the angle that works for you is important, that’s so true. Practice in front of the mirror if need be.

Thanks for sharing some tips here.
